Blogging for Traffic

It is inevitable. The college kid who uses Facebook and Twitter has just learned that you can promote on each and he is going to teach you a think or two and by golly don't let that old school web designer tell you that it is a passing fad. Likewise you should blog. No matter what! After all, he should know, he's 22 and he knows cutting edge. Well, I figure, not quite.

I am not saying don't use the social media for promotion and certainly, if you like it, blog away. Go ahead, but remember that you are tossing a penny into the treasury debt when you are promoting this way. You must have a plan, and by the way, it is the same ole tried and true plan.

Start at the heart of your business and make it the best it can be. Reach out and greet new customers in the environment that promotes your business. Like say if you are a crafter, join crafting groups online...long BEFORE you make a Facebook page, a blog or anything else. You know why? The answer is, then you actually have someone to tell about your business Facebook (more on that statement later) and your newest designs.  Yes, all traffic is good, but the only traffic you should put effort in is "Targeted Traffic" all the rest is secondary. Unless, of course you want to sell everything to everyone.

Be sure that you love what you are doing, because blogging is an everyday affair if done right. If you have to sit down and think about your next blog entry, you are not ready to blog. It is about you and your craft, not what can I say to bring people to your site.  It is to share with the rest of the world things you love about what you do. Whether it be helpful hints, a disgusted experience or whatever. You know when you are ready to blog the moment you have a thought cross your mind and say "I gotta get home and talk about this".

Now about that social media. I don't know about you,but I like my friends and my business separate (well for most things), and I certainly don't want clients to read about my sick stomach today when I woudn't mind at all that my family knew. I sort of got suckered in, because I didn't make a business page first off and now I have to mind my ps and qs (sometimes I don't). So, my best advice to you. If you are promoting a business, get a business Facebook, not a personal one and don't go asking to make friends with personal contact pages. Let THEM ask you.

Hey I really like this blogging thing and I know I am ready...Are you?
